How to Use a CNC Milling Machine: Step-by-Step Guide

Como usar uma fresadora nº 1: guia passo a passo

CNC milling machine (CNC Mill) is a computer numerical controlled metal processing machine with 3-axis, 4-axis, or 5-axis capabilities, allowing simultaneous milling operations. It functions similarly to a CNC machining center, featuring a high-speed spindle, high-power servo motor, and a heavy-duty machine bed, capable of performing milling, drilling, boring, reaming, and tapping.

If you're new to CNC milling, learning to operate the machine correctly is essential. Beginners often struggle with the process, while experienced machinists continuously seek ways to improve efficiency. So, how do you effectively and safely operate a CNC mill?

This guide provides 9 easy-to-follow steps to help both beginners and professionals master CNC milling machine operations.

CNC Milling Machine Operating Steps (Step-by-Step Guide)

Step 1: Return to the Reference Point

After turning on the CNC milling machine, the first step is to return it to the reference point. This establishes the machine's coordinate system and ensures accurate positioning.

Step 2: Position and Secure the Workpiece

  1. Move the machine table to the center position (press the negative key to avoid overtravel).
  2. Place the workpiece on the table and ensure it is firmly positioned.

Step 3: Align and Clamp the Workpiece

  1. Use a dial indicator to align the workpiece before clamping (if the workpiece allows, you can mill it directly without alignment).
  2. If using a vise, first correct the vise jaws to ensure the workpiece is parallel to the machine's axis.

Step 4: X-Axis Tool Setting

  1. Install the tool setter on the spindle and start the spindle (optical tool setters do not rotate).
  2. Switch the machine to handwheel mode and follow these steps:
    • Move the tool to the right end of the workpiece, slowly approach it, and ensure precision.
    • Raise the tool in the Z direction (without moving in X) and reset the relative X-coordinate to zero.
    • Move the tool to the left end of the workpiece and repeat the process.
    • Record the X relative coordinate, divide it by two, then move to this position and record the machine coordinate in the workpiece coordinate system.

Step 5: Y-Axis Tool Setting

Repeat the process from Step 4, but in the +Y to -Y direction for Y-axis tool setting.

Step 6: Z-Axis Tool Setting

Use a feeler gauge, measuring rod, or Z-axis tool setter for Z-direction tool setting.

  • After precise measurement, subtract the thickness of the tool-setting device from the current machine coordinate value and enter it into the workpiece coordinate system.

Step 7: Enter Tool Compensation Values

If running a manually programmed operation, be sure to enter the tool radius compensation into the tool compensation settings.

Step 8: Run the Manual Program

  1. Load the machining program and switch to automatic mode.
  2. Select single-segment mode, then press cycle start to begin.

Step 9: Run the Automatic Program

  1. Select DNC mode (Direct Numerical Control), enable single-segment execution mode.
  2. Press cycle start and simultaneously send the program from the PC communication software.

CNC Milling Machine Operating Rules (Safety & Best Practices)

To ensure safety and efficiency, CNC operators should follow these best practices:

Follow the CNC Machine Manual – Be familiar with the machine’s structure and operational environment. Avoid errors due to improper handling.

Wear Proper Safety Gear – Always use safety glasses, gloves, and protective clothing to prevent injuries from metal chips.

Pre-Operation Checks – Before turning on the machine:

  • Remove any obstructions or measuring tools from the worktable.
  • Inspect mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems for issues.
  • Ensure the guide rails are properly lubricated.

Correct Start-Up & Shutdown Sequence

  1. Turn on the CNC machine first, then the CNC system.
  2. When shutting down, turn off the CNC system first, then the machine.

Verify Tool and Workpiece Setup – Double-check workpiece coordinate systems, tool offsets, and program codes before running the program.

Check Machining Program Before Execution

  • Review G-code, instructions, addresses, values, signs, decimals, and syntax for errors.
  • Perform a test run before actual cutting to prevent tool or workpiece collisions.

Reduce Feed Rate During Test Cutting

  • Set the feed override switch to a low speed during test cutting.
  • When the tool reaches 30-50mm from the workpiece, pause to verify the Z-axis and XY-coordinates match the programmed values.

Emergency Stop in Case of Abnormalities

  • If an issue occurs, immediately press the red emergency stop button to halt machine operations.
  • Troubleshoot the issue before restarting the machine.

Proper Tool Handling During Changeover

  • Hold the tool holder before pressing the tool change button.
  • Ensure the tool is fully seated and secured before releasing the holder.
  • Do not change tools while the spindle is rotating.

Regular Cleaning & Maintenance

  • After machining, clean the work area and remove metal chips.
  • Wipe the guide rails clean and apply lubricant to prevent rust.

Things to Consider

Mastering CNC milling is not an overnight process. It requires hands-on experience and continuous learning. Here are some tips:
Be patient – Don't rush to master everything at once.
Follow proper procedures – Reduces the risk of damage to the machine and workpieces.
Practice frequently – Perform test runs and simulations to improve skills.
